YOUNGSVILLE, La. - Lulu Vazquez singled in two runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie, as the Nicholls State University softball team scored four unanswered to knock off Eastern Illinois, 4-2, on Sunday to wrap up play in the Mardi Gras Mambo.
Nicholls improved to 4-11 on the season while EIU fell to 6-11.
Eastern led 2-0 after getting RBI doubles in the second and third innings, but the Colonels got one back in the bottom half of the third on an
Alexa Poche' sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Nicholls produced a run to tie the game without recording a hit. A pair of walks put two on and a double steal by
Jacey Meade and
Bree Aguillard put runners in scoring position. Meade then came home on a passed ball.
Vazquez gave Nicholls the lead in the fifth after Poche' walked and
Samantha Gwiazda singled.
Paris Lehman (1-4) would allow only a leadoff single in the seventh to secure her first victory of the season. She scattered six hits in 5.1 innings of relief and struck out one.
