Women's Tennis cruises in singles for 5-2 win over Bryant

THIBODAUX, La. - A dominating performance in singles by the Nicholls State University women's tennis team resulted in a 5-2 home victory over Bryant University on Wednesday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

With the win, Nicholls evened its record at 7-7 while Bryant slipped to 7-6. Although the Bulldogs joined the Southland Conference as an affiliate member, the match does not count towards the teams' conference record.

Nicholls started out sluggish by dropping the doubles points with losses on courts 1 and 3, but Carla Bouygues and Dareen Hassan posted an impressive showing at No. 2 with a 6-1 victory.

In singles play, the Colonels claimed all their points with five straight-set victories. Bouygues continued her strong season with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5. She improved to 9-4 on the season which leads the team.

Sophia Sara Safarova then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage. Constanza Cruz was next in line, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and then Hassan clinched the team victory with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3. After Bryant's Camila Baeza won at No. 6, Simona Maksimovic closed out the match with a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Sarah Hickey.
