Nicholls Softball sweeps HCU in Friday doubleheader

THIBODAUX, La. - After a masterful performance in the circle by Audrey McNeill in a 6-0 shutout victory to open the series against HCU, the Nicholls State University softball team had to rally back twice in Game 2 before senior Melise Gossen hit a walkoff single in the eighth inning to give the Colonels a 3-2 win and a doubleheader sweep Friday at Swanner Field at GeoSurfaces Park.

Nicholls (26-22, 12-11 SLC) will go for its first conference series sweep as the Colonels host HCU (20-26, 9-11 SLC) on Senior Day Saturday at noon. Following the game, the program will recognize Gossen -- their lone senior.

Game 1 - Nicholls 6, HCU 0

Audrey McNeill took a no-hitter into the seventh inning while the offense pushed across two runs in each of the first three innings, leading to a 6-0 shutout win in Game 1.

McNeill (11-8) was perfect through four innings before an error allowed a runner to reach in the fifth. Then with three outs to go, Haylie Savage spoiled the bid with a leadoff single through the right side. Despite the hit, McNeill added her sixth strikeout of the game as she went on to secure her third shutout of the season.

Nicholls finished with 11 hits which included three-hit outings by Gossen and Brynne Songy. Gossen had two doubles and a triple, driving in three, while Claire Sisco also doubled and had two RBIs. Alexa Poche' joined the trio with a multi-hit game and scored two runs.

The first four runs of the game were produced with two outs. Gossen doubled in two runs in the opening frame before Sisco made it 4-0 in the second with a 2-run double. In the third, Poche' walked and scored on Gossen's triple. MaKynli Miller then made the final count on an RBI groundout.

Game 2 - Nicholls 3, HCU 2 (8 inn.)

The Colonels had to tie the game in the sixth and seventh innings before Melise Gossen hit a walkoff single in the eighth for a 3-2 victory.

HCU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first after a Colonel error and it was enough for Lyndie Swanson through five innings as she kept Nicholls off the board. But in the sixth, Alexa Poche' smack a single to left that drove in Claire Sisco from second base. The Huskies answered with a solo homer by Autumn Sydlik in the seventh but Nicholls forced extras with a run in the bottom half.

With one down, pinch-runner Brianna McFaddin stole second and the throw went into center field. McFaddin then took off for third, got the green light for home and beat the tag at the plate for a 2-2 tie.

In the extra frame, HCU used two hits and an intentional walk to load the bases with two outs. Maggie Childs then flared a shallow shot into right center but Sisco made a diving catch, saving at least two runs from scoring. For the bottom half, Erin Krause legged a one-out triple and HCU elected to pitch around Poche'. Facing an 0-2 court, Gossen smoked a base hit through the left side for the game-winning run.

Molly Yoo (12-10) struck out a career-high seven batters in eight innings of work. She allowed eight hits and walked one. After giving up her third hit to lead off the second, Yoo had a stretch of 12 consecutive retired batters.

MaKynli Miller had two of the Colonels' eight hits. Her leadoff single in the seventh made way for McFaddin's game-tying run.
