Nicholls Knocks Off Missouri State, Falls to McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. - A season-high 17 hits led to a 12-8 victory for the Nicholls State University softball team over Missouri State as the Colonels split their Saturday doubleheader in the I-10 Border Classic at Cowgirl Diamond.

Nicholls (3-5) followed up the win with an 8-1 nonconference loss to host McNeese. The Colonels will wrap up the weekend on Sunday in Beaumont with a 10:30 a.m. contest against No. 6 Tennessee.

Game 1 - Nicholls 12, Missouri State 8

After falling behind 5-0 in the first inning, Nicholls responded with a four-run second and a five-run fourth to take down Missouri State, 12-8.

The Colonels posted season highs in hits (17) and runs (12) to notch their first win of the weekend. Freshman Ally Mooneyham went 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Claire Sisco, Erin Krause, Riley Rutherford, Molly VandenBout, Lilianna Robledo, and Reagan Heflin all tallied two hits.

Freshman Libby May made the start in the circle and left in the first inning after giving up a three-run homer to Halle Studer. Molly Yoo took over and went the distance, tossing 6.1 innings with two earned runs on eight hits and struck out eight.

Heflin started off the scoring in the second with an RBI single. Sisco made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly before Mooneyham singled in two runs to tie the game.

In the fourth, Rutherford cleared the bases with a double after Sisco put Nicholls up with a run-scoring single. VandenBout capped the inning with a base hit to right for a 9-5 lead.

For the sixth, Sydni Stevens delivered a pinch-hit RBI double for the 10th consecutive run for the Colonels. But Missouri State finally got to Yoo, scoring two in the bottom half.

Mooneyham highlighted a two-run seventh with an RBI single. Despite allowing a solo homer, Yoo went on to finish the game for her second win of the season.

Game 2 - McNeese 8, Nicholls 1

Nicholls struck first with a Rutherford RBI single in the opening frame but it would be the only run of the game in its 8-1 loss to McNeese.

Errors proved to be costly as McNeese tied the game on a Colonel miscue in the third. Then two more errors in the fourth made way for a five-run inning.

McNeese added two insurance runs in the fifth on an Onna McElroy base hit. McElroy had a 2-run homer in the previous inning and finished 3-for-3.

VandenBout suffered the loss with five runs -- all unearned -- in 3.1 innings.

Cisco and Rutherford both totaled two hits.
