OXFORD, Miss. - The Nicholls State University softball team came up empty in Saturday's slate at the Ole Miss Classic, falling 10-5 to South Alabama before suffering a 14-0 loss in five innings to Ole Miss.
Nicholls will conclude the weekend with a 10:00 a.m. matchup with Murray State. The Colonels knocked off the Racers on Friday, 10-5.
Game 1 - South Alabama 10, Nicholls 5
In the decisive third inning, Nicholls took a 5-2 lead with three runs but South Alabama countered with four and went on to plate four more unanswered for a 10-5 victory over the Colonels.
Nicholls totaled nine hits with batters No. 7 through 9 in the lineup accounting for five and all five RBIs.
Carmella Muccilli went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while
Riley Rutherford was 2-for-4.
After USA took a 2-0 lead in the first, Muccilli and
Laylin Sturm tied the game in the second with RBI singles. Then in the third, Muccilli doubled in two runs and Rutherford made it 5-2 with a single up the middle.
But in the bottom half, South Alabama used three hits and took advantage of an error, two hit-by-pitches and a walk to score five runs. They added one in the fourth and two in the fifth to make the final.
Averi Paden allowed seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Molly Yoo was charged with the other three runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Game 2 - Ole Miss 14, Nicholls 0 (5 inn.)
Ole Miss had a grand slam in the first inning and scored nine runs en route to a 14-0 run-rule victory.
After recording just one hit in Friday's 5-0 loss to Ole Miss, Nicholls still had trouble with the Rebel pitching as the Colonels had two two-out hits - a
Reagan Heflin double in the second and
Claire Sisco reached on a bunt single in the third.
Ole Miss totaled 15 hits which included two long balls. Jaden Pone hit the grand slam for the Rebels while Lexi Brady added a solo shot in the second.
Sierra Ouellette took the loss, giving up seven runs on four hits and two walks in 0.2 innings.
Katy Sanders saw 3.0 innings with four runs on seven hits.Â
