THIBODAUX, La. - Molly Yoo held UIW without a run through nine innings while back-to-back doubles by
Molly VandenBout and
Carmella Muccilli led to the game's lone run as the Nicholls State University softball team defeated UIW, 1-0, in extra innings on Thursday evening at Swanner Field.
With the win, Nicholls improved to 3-1 in league play and 11-14 overall. The teams will wrap up the series on Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
Yoo posted four three-up, three-down innings en route to her fifth win of the season. She walked just two and struck out three.
The offense outhit UIW, 9-4, but could not produce a run throughout the game. Nicholls had a great chance to grab the lead in the third by loading the bases with one out, but second baseman Ryleigh Mata made a highlight stop on a grounder and turned a double play.
Nicholls also left two runners on in the fourth and fifth innings.
After neither team had much going in the next three innings, Yoo carried that momentum into the ninth and retired UIW in order. For the Colonels. VandenBout started the decisive inning with a double for her second hit of the game.
Muccilli needed just one pitch and lifted it in the gap of right center, bringing in VandenBout for the win.
Brynne Songy and VandenBout had two hits each to lead the Colonels.Â
