Colonel Softball Swept at McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team dropped both of its games of Saturday's doubleheader at McNeese, falling 7-3 and 5-1 at Cowgirl Diamond.

With the losses, Nicholls sits at 10-20 overall and 3-6 in the Southland. McNeese (21-13, 7-2 SLC) extended its winning streak against the Colonels to six games and has won 14 of the last 15.

Game 1 - McNeese 7, Nicholls 3

The Cowgirls tied the game in the fourth at 1-1 before pushing across six runs in the fifth to clinch the series with a 7-3 win. 

Molly VandenBout gave Nicholls an early lead with an RBI double in the first. The score stayed 1-0 until the fourth when Reese Reyna hit a solo homer to tie the game.

In the fifth, McNeese`scored three runs before Reyna left the yard for the second time, this time with two runners on. 

For the seventh, the Colonels looked to rally late with two runs as Laylin Sturm drove in one on a double and another scored on a sac fly, but McNeese went on to secure the series. 

Claire Sisco had two of the Colonels' six hits in the loss. In the circle, VandenBout took the loss with three earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. 

Game 2 - McNeese 5, Nicholls 1

McNeese doubled up the Colonels in hits, 8-4, and picked up a sweep with a 5-2 victory.

Sisco, VandenBout, and Reagan Heflin all singled while Ally Mooneyham added a double. Two of the hits came in the opening inning, leading to a Heflin sac fly.

But McNeese answered with three hits for two runs in the bottom half and never surrendered the lead. 

Nyjah Fontenot led McNeese with two hits. Molly You pitched all six innings for the Colonels, allowing five runs on eight hits.

Nicholls will return home for the next six games, starting on Wednesday, March 26 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Jackson State.
