Colonels Match Nation's Longest Winning Streak with Friday Sweep of Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team extended its winning streak to 14 games with a doubleheader sweep at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, defeating the Islanders 4-1 and 6-1 on Friday at Chapman Field.

The 14-game streak matched Virginia Tech for the NCAA's longest active winning streak in Division I softball. Nicholls (24-20, 14-6 SLC) will go for No. 15 in a row in the series finale on Saturday against A&M-Corpus Christi (9-31, 3-17 SLC) with first pitch set for 12 p.m.

Game 1 - Nicholls 4, AMCC 1

Erin Krause went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Molly Yoo allowed no earned runs in six innings as the Colonels won their 13th straight game with a 4-1 victory over the Islanders.

Yoo continued to shine in the opening game of the Colonels' league series, giving up just three hits while striking out four. In her last four opening starts, she has allowed only two earned runs in 27.0 innings, resulting in a 4-0 record with a 0.52 ERA while striking out 21.

After three scoreless innings, Nicholls broke the tie in the fourth with two runs. Molly VandenBout led off with a single and scored when Reagan Heflin scorched a hit into the gap for an RBI double. Heflin then scored on an Islander error for a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, Krause dropped a two-out single to right to plate Laylin Sturm, who reached earlier on an infield single. The Islanders had two of their three hits for the game in the bottom half but Yoo stranded both runners.

Two Colonel errors allowed AMCC to score its first run in the sixth, but Krause got the run back in the seventh with another two-out RBI.

Averi Paden worked a perfect seventh to earn her second save of the week.

Kendra Winfrey took the loss in the complete game effort, allowing eight hits and struck out three.

Game 2 - Nicholls 6, AMCC 1

The Colonels received another outstanding performance in the circle as Molly VandenBout went the distance allowing just three hits while the offense exploded late, lifting Nicholls to a 6-1 victory to clinch the series against the Islanders.

Nicholls led 1-0 after five innings before Reagan Heflin, who was 3-for-4, delivered a two-run single in the sixth. In the bottom half, AMCC received a triple by pinch hitter Ripley Welker and it led to the Islanders' lone run of the game.

But the Colonels racked up four hits in the final frame to push the lead to 6-1. Laylin Sturm had an RBI single before Heflin dropped a double down the left field line for the final two runs of the day.

VandenBout notched her first seven-inning complete game of the season, striking out one in the process. She retired the Islanders in order three times including in the seventh to finish off her outing.

Nicholls totaled 12 hits with Ally Mooneyham and Krause joining Heflin with multi-hit efforts. Mooneyham recorded the first RBI of the day with an infield single in the second which resulted in Riley Rutherford scoring from second on the play. For Krause, it marked her ninth consecutive game with at least two hits.

Malia Williams lasted 6.2 innings for the Islanders, giving up all six runs on 12 hits.Â
