Colonels' Winning Streak Ends at 16 After Doubleheader Split with NSU

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team extended its winning streak to 16 games in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 walk-off victory in the opener against Northwestern State, but the Colonels could not find enough offense in Game 2 as the Demons picked up a split with a 5-1 win Thursday at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Nicholls and Northwestern State will wrap up the series in the Colonels' home finale at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Game 1 - Nicholls 3, Northwestern State 2

After falling behind 2-0 through two innings, the Colonels scored a run in each of the final three frames, winning on a walk-off single by Erin Krause.

With the game tied at 2-2 with two outs in the seventh, Claire Sisco doubled in the gap to put the winning run on base. Krause then blooped an 0-1 pitch into the outfield for a base hit, allowing Sisco to score easily from second.

Krause was 3-for-4 at the plate while Sisco and Carmella Muccilli each had two hits. Averi Paden picked up the win with 4.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three.

Molly Yoo made the start and left the game in the third after allowing a run in the first two innings. DJ Lynch had an RBI double for the visitors in the opening inning and Camryn Becnel added a run-scoring single in the second.

Nicholls stranded at least one runner in each of the first three innings and finally cracked the scoring column in the fifth thanks to a Demon error. Sisco once again started the two-out rally with a base hit up the middle. Krause followed with a single and it rolled under the glove of the Demon rightfielder. Sisco raced home and Krause tried to score as well but was tagged out in a rundown.

In the sixth, Riley Rutherford tied the score at 2-2 when she laced a shot past the shortstop and into the gap for a double. Reagan Heflin scored on the play after reaching on a walk.

Kaymie Chandler suffered the loss for NSU, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

Game 2 - Northwestern State 5, Nicholls 1

The Demons jumped out to an early lead once again but were able to hang on behind a strong pitching performance by Brooklynn Stohler for a 5-1 victory.

Nicholls was limited to two hits in the loss, getting one from Rutherford and Heflin. Rutherford had the lone RBI with a ground-rule double in the second inning.

NSU's early advantage came courtesy of a three-run home run by Lynch in the first inning. Molly VandenBout exited the game after giving up her fourth hit of the frame and Paden pitched the rest of the way. The other run in the first came via an error.

Lynch added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Paden was credited with 7.0 innings pitched, scattering eight hits while striking out two. Strohler also pitched all seven for NSU to earn her fourth win of the season.

Along with the Colonels' winning streak coming to an end, Krause saw her 14-game hitting streak stopped. She finished 0-for-3 but two of the outs were results of outstanding plays in the outfield by the Demons.
