Colonels Rally to Top Memphis on Walkoff, 8-7

BATON ROUGE, La. - After falling behind 7-0 early, the Nicholls State University softball team pieced together three multi-run frames including a three-run seventh to defeat Memphis, 8-7, in the finale of the LSU Invitational on Sunday.

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Erin Krause started the rally with an RBI triple. Memphis had an error that allowed the tying run to cross the plate, then with runners in scoring position with one down, Gabby Higbee singled through the left side for the walk-off victory.

Higbee, Claire Sisco and Reagan Heflin each turned in two-hit games. Krause and Higbee fueled the scoring with two RBIs apiece.

Molly Yoo (5-3) earned the win with 5.2 shutout innings of relief, fanning five while scattering three hits.

Memphis jumped all over the Colonels in the first inning with five hits for four runs. In the top of the second, the Tigers added three more singles before Nicholls went to Yoo. Memphis scored two more runs on an error for the 7-0 advantage.

In the bottom half, Nicholls cut into the lead with two runs. An error allowed the first to score, then Higbee grounded out for an RBI.

Following three shutout frames by Yoo, Nicholls rallied with three runs in the fifth. The Colonels loaded the bases with no outs on a single and two walks, and Krause and Brynne Songy delivered sacrifice flies for the first two runs. Heflin added an infield single to make it 7-5.

Yoo retired her eighth consecutive batter to end the seventh before Nicholls mounted its string of eight unanswered runs to snap its five-game skid.
