SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but UIW kept the Colonels off the scoreboard for the rest of the game and rallied with six runs in the sixth to prevent a sweep with a 6-2 victory on Saturday at H-E-B Field.
Despite the loss, Nicholls (15-12, 4-2 SLC) received another outstanding showing in the circle this week from
Sierra Ouellette who tossed 4.0 shutout innings and struck out five in the start.Â
The Colonels gave her an early lead in the first when
Claire Sisco singled and
Madison Moak reached on a walk.
Erin Krause had an RBI groundout for the first run before Moak beat the throw home on a shallow sacrifice fly by
Lilianna Robledo.
Nicholls put two on in the fourth after back-to-back singles by
Kayleigh Lugowski and
Gabby Higbee but both were left stranded. Then in the sixth, the Colonels tried to extend the lead but Krause was thrown out at home on a deflected shot back to the pitcher.
UIW carried that momentum into the bottom half, racking up five hits to fuel the rally. Madison Dorrow had the go-ahead two-run single before Victoria Altamirano doubled in the final two runs.
Molly Yoo suffered the loss with six runs in the decisive inning. She retired UIW in order in the fifth before running into trouble in the sixth.
Ashley Little gave up a double to close out the inning.
Bella Mitchell claimed the win with 2.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing just a
Laylin Sturm single in the seventh.Â
