Krause, Sisco Reach Milestone as Colonels Split with HCU

HOUSTON - Seniors Claire Sisco and Erin Krause each notched their 200th career hit as the Nicholls State University softball team picked up a split in Friday's doubleheader against HCU at Husky Field, winning Game 1, 3-0, before falling in the night cap, 4-2.

Sisco reached on a bunt single to start the game in the opener to become just the sixth Colonel in program history to reach the plateau. Krause had two hits in the opener and then singled in the fifth inning of Game 2 to become the seventh player all-time.

Nicholls (23-17, 11-6 SLC) and HCU (6-31, 3-14 SLC) will wrap up the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon.

Game 1 - Nicholls 3, HCU 0

Molly Yoo tossed her second shutout of the season while Kayleigh Lugowski homered for the fourth time as the Colonels took the opener, 3-0.

Yoo struck out five and scattered five hits to secure her 12th victory of the season. She issued just one walk and was able to work around a pair of doubles to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard.

Lugowski's solo shot in the second gave Yoo more than enough run support. Reagan Heflin added an RBI single in the third before Erin Krause plated the final run with an RBI base hit in the seventh.

Nicholls totaled 11 hits with Krause, Lugowski, Gabby Higbee and Laylin Sturm each recording two in the win.

Leah Hammack suffered the loss with two strikeouts in her complete game.

Game 2 - HCU 4, Nicholls 2

Nicholls knotted the score twice against HCU before the Huskies scored unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to claim their third league win of the season.

The Colonels totaled seven hits but stranded 10 runners on base. Sisco and Heflin led the offense with two hits each.

Sierra Ouellette took the loss with two earned runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out five, walked three and hit a batter.

HCU struck first with two hits in the opening frame, but a Colonel error allowed the Huskies to take a 1-0 lead.

Nicholls threatened in the second by loading the bases after a Heflin single, an error and a hit-by-pitch, but Cara Pittman retired Sisco to maintain the 1-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Heflin singled again to start the inning and came around to score on a Gabby Higbee double to center. However, HCU answered in the bottom half with an RBI single off the bat of Heidi Maytum. Maddy Bailey scored after tripling off the top of the wall to lead off the frame.

HCU went to the bullpen in the fifth, and Sisco greated Addy Prasifka with a double down the left field line. Following a single by Krause, Lilianna Robledo hit a grounder to second and the Huskies tried to keep the lead by going to the plate Sisco but beat the throw home, tying the score at 2-2.

But once again, HCU answered with the help of a two-out rally in the fifth. A hit-by-pitch and a walk put the go-ahead run in scoring position, and Bailey delivered an RBI single.

HCU added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final.

Prasifka threw 3.0 innings to earn the win, striking out four while allowing three hits.Â
