THIBODAUX, La. - For the second straight series, the Nicholls State University softball team took the opening game of its doubleheader but came up short in Game 2 as the Colonels run-ruled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 10-1, before falling in the night cap, 3-2.
The series finale at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park will be on Wednesday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch.Â
Game 1 - Nicholls 10, AMCC 1 (5 inn.)
The Colonels broke a 0-0 tie with four runs in the fourth before ending the game early with six in the fifth to take the series opener.
Nicholls had 10 hits in the victory and had a late power surge in the fifth with a double and two home runs, including a walk-off two-run shot by
Claire Sisco.
Gabby Higbee doubled for two runs to push the lead to 6-1, then
Brynne Songy lofted a homer to left for two more. Sisco ended the game with her first home run of the season.
Sisco, Songy and Higbee all had two hits to pace the offense. Sisco and
Reagan Heflin had triples while Songy and
Kayleigh Lugowski added a double.
Molly Yoo threw a complete game, allowing three hits while striking out three. She and AMCC's Josie Whitehead kept the offense scoreless through three innings.
Lugowski delivered the Red and Gray's first hit of the day, leading off the fourth with a double off the left field wall. Shortstop
Lilianna Robledo, who robbed a base hit earlier in the game, gave Nicholls a 1-0 advantage with a single to left.Â
Higbee singled to put runners on the corners, and Songy followed with a hard grounder down the third base line for two RBIs. Sisco ended the scoring in the fourth as well with an RBI triple.
The Islanders answered with three singles against Yoo to start the sixth, but she only allowed a sacrifice fly which put the score at 4-1.
The Colonels' big sixth inning was all done with two outs. Heflin legged out a triple to start the rally, and after a walk, Higbee doubled in two runs. Songy then made it 8-1 with her first home run of the season.
Sturm singled to turn the lineup over and Sisco ended the game with her first out-of-the-park homer at Swanner Field.
Game 2 - AMCC 3, Nicholls 2
Nicholls once again was the first to score with a pair of runs in the fifth, however, the Islanders answered with three in the top of the sixth and held on for a 3-2 victory.
The Colonels led briefly when
Erin Krause ripped a two-out single for a 1-0 lead, and she then scored on a misplayed ball in right field. But in the next half inning, AMCC used four hits to plate three runs. Karisa Lopez drove in the first run with an RBI single before a sacrifice fly tied the game. With two down, Erynne Castillo smacked a pinch-hit single for the 3-2 lead.
AMCC's Kendra Winfrey retired the final six Colonels in order to finish off her complete game. She struck out four while allowing six hits.
Three of the hits came in the Colonels' third but Nicholls could not produce a run. Songy drove a single up the middle and Sturm and Sisco followed with bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. But a liner to second ended up being a double play, and Winfrey forced a flyout to end the threat.
The Colonels also stranded two in the third after a one-out Helfin single and a Robledo walk.
Sierra Ouellette struck out five in 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
Averi Paden pitched a scoreless seventh.
Strum led the Colonels with two hits while six different Islanders had a hit against Ouellette.
