Colonels Run-Rule Lions in Doubleheader Sweep

THIBODAUX, La. - Madison Moak and Gabby Higbee combined for 11 hits and nine RBIs while Molly Yoo and Sierra Ouellette had outstanding showings in the circle as the Nicholls State University softball team run-ruled East Texas A&M in both games of Thursday's doubleheader, 9-1 and 8-0, at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

After seeing its streak of nine consecutive series wins come to an end last weekend, Nicholls (21-16, 9-5 SLC) clinched the series against East Texas A&M (6-33, 1-13 SLC) with the doubleheader sweep. The series finale will be on Friday, April 3 at 12:00 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will be following the game.

Game 1 - Nicholls 9, East Texas A&M 1 (5 inn.)

Nicholls scored seven runs in the third before Gabby Higbee hit a two-run double in the fifth for a walk-off 8-0 victory.

The Colonels racked up six hits in the decisive frame which included four doubles. Lilianna Robledo started off the scoring with a two-run double, then Kayleigh Lugowski made it 3-0 with a double. Higbee added her first double of the day for two more runs before Laylin Sturm drove in another runner on a sacrifice fly. Robledo added her third RBI of the inning with a bases loaded walk for the 7-0 lead.

Molly Yoo carried a no-hitter into the fourth but Tatum Wright ended that and the shutout bid with a solo home run to right -- her 11th long ball of the season. The Lions had two more hits in the frame but Reagan Heflin made a diving catch in right field and doubled up the runner at first to end the inning.

In the fifth, Madison Moak doubled to start the inning and two walks loaded the bases. Higbee then smoked a 2-2 pitch into the gap for two runs and a walk-off victory.

Higbee finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs while Robledo drove in three. Moak and Lugowski chipped in with two hits each.

Yoo struck out three in 5.0 innings of work, allowing the three hits in the fourth. For the Lions, Emma Olsen allowed 12 hits and walked seven in her complete game.

Game 2 - Nicholls 8, East Texas A&M 0 (6 inn.)

Sierra Ouellette flirted with a no-hitter while the Colonels pounded out another double-digit hit performance as Nicholls secured the series with an 8-0 win in six innings.

Moak started off the scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer, which was her team-leading fifth of the season.

Ouellette walked one batter in the first and third innings before retiring the Lions in order in the fourth. In the bottom half, the Colonels had four hits to extend their lead to 6-0. Gabby Higbee doubled in the first run, Claire Sisco dropped an RBI single to right, then Moak plated two on her double.

With two outs and one on in the sixth, the Lions recorded their first hit of the game on an infield single by KK Cosek. It would be the lone hit allowed by Ouellette, who struck out four in the win.

In the Colonels' half of the sixth, Nevanna Smith led off the frame with her first home run of the season as she cleared the left center wall. Following singles by Sisco and Moak, Erin Krause lofted a deep fly to right for the game-winning sac fly.

Moak closed out her Thursday going 4-for-4 with four RBIs. She reached base all eight times on the day, totaling six hits and two walks. Sisco was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Smith added a two-hit game.
