Dontez Byrd is in his first year at Nicholls State University as wide receivers coach, bringing with him a diverse background in both coaching and professional playing experience.
Prior to joining Nicholls, Byrd served as an assistant at the University of Tulsa, where he continued to build his reputation as a young coach with strong player development skills.
Before Tulsa, he spent time at Western Kentucky, working first as the running backs quality control coach and later transitioning to wide receiver quality control, gaining valuable experience on both sides of the offensive skill positions.
Before stepping into coaching, Byrd was a standout collegiate athlete, beginning his career at the University of Louisville before transferring to Tennessee Tech University, where he finished his playing career. His performance earned him an opportunity at the professional level, including time with the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League.
Byrd’s professional journey extended beyond the NFL, as he competed in multiple leagues, showcasing his resilience and passion for the game. He spent time in the Alliance of American Football (AAF), XFL, Canadian Football League (CFL), and Indoor Football League (IFL). His playing career ultimately came full circle when he wrapped up his time on the field in the XFL in 2023.
Now transitioning fully into coaching, Byrd brings a well-rounded perspective shaped by his experiences across different levels of football. His background as both a player and coach positions him to make an immediate impact at Nicholls as he begins this new chapter.
