LaQuintin Caston And Bobby Felder Honored By Southland

FRISCO, Texas – Sophomore quarterback LaQuintin Caston was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week and junior defensive back Bobby Felder was honored with Southland Special Teams Player of the Week recognition, announced the league office on Monday morning.

Caston and Felder each played pivotal roles in the Colonels four-overtime victory at Texas State on Saturday night.

“The win was great for our program, and to have our student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the game is truly special. We are very proud of the overall effort by our team to beat a very good team at their stadium,” said head football coach Charlie Stubbs.

Caston led the Colonels offensive attack with four total touchdowns (two rushing, two passing) that included a late fourth quarter rally with Nicholls trailing by seven – 21-14. Caston orchestrated a 6-play drive that lasted over three minutes which was capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Kenyad Blair with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Caston sacrificed himself as he dived for the corner pylon on a 5-yard quarterback scramble to give Nicholls the lead. Texas State answered in its half, and in the second overtime, both teams traded field goals.

After a third overtime score by sophomore running back Jesse Turner, Caston made due on the two-point conversion with a pass to true freshman running back Marcus Washington. Texas State answered once again, and both headed to the fourth overtime period.

Texas State scored first, but its attempt at the mandated two-point conversion was intercepted by redshirt freshman safety Aldaro Russell, and Caston answered the bell for the Colonels on the ensuing offensive series with a 2-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Joshua Warren.

The two-point try for the Colonels was successful with Caston finding sophomore wide receiver Chucky Nichols in the flat underneath coverage, and Nicholls regained the paddle.

“Both of these awards recognize individual effort, but these awards would not have been achieved if not for the team effort in the game. We were in a situation to win and ultimately won the game due to playing together as a team,” said Stubbs.

Felder helped lift the Colonels when their offense was struggling in the third quarter by scooping up the loose, rolling ball on the turf that was made possible by junior cornerback Chika Madu's blocked field goal. Madu snuffed a 25-yard Texas State attempt, and Felder did the rest, carrying in the ball 70-yards untouched the opposite way.
