Colonel Soccer Embarks on Texas Road Trip

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team (6-7-1, 0-5-0 Southland Conference) hits the road in search of its first conference victory when the Colonels head to Texas to take on Texas State on Friday and Texas-San Antonio on Sunday.

The Colonels have already turned in the most successful season in school history by surpassing the previous single season school record for victories of of four, set in 2003 and equaled in 2006 and 2009, by getting off to a 6-2-1 start in non-conference play in 2010.  However, the Colonels, hampered by injuries at the start of the conference season have gotten off to an 0-5-0 start in league play.

Nicholls will be looking to turn things around with an upset of the reigning Southland Conference regular season champions on Friday when the Colonels take on Texas State.  However, the Bobcats provide a formidable opponent.  Texas State enters the weekend with a 9-5-1 mark and a 3-1-1 conference mark.  The Bobcats own a 7-1-1 record over their last nine matches and remain one match behind conference leader UTSA.

The Colonels will take on the Roadrunners on Sunday in San Antonio looking for some success against the UTSA.  Nicholls battled to a 1-1 tie with the Roadrunners in Thibodaux last season.  However, the Roadrunners remain undefeated in conference play, owning a 4-0-0 record in league play and a 9-5-1 overall mark.

Nicholls will look to get it's offense back on track this weekend after snapping a four-match scoreless skid against Sam Houston State on Sunday.  The Colonels still boast the league's leading scorer in the form of senior forward Kaity Mattsson.  The Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada native's 12 goals not only lead the Southland, but ranks 12th nationally.  Mattsson also ranks in the top-20 in the country in goals per game (7th, 0.87) and points per game (13th, 1.86).  Her point total of 27 ranks 21st in the nation.

Nicholls' two-match road trip this weekend will mark the finale of the road portion of the Colonels' 2010 schedule.  After this weekend, the Colonels will return home to wrap up the regular season with home matches against Northwestern State on Oct. 29 and Central Arkansas on Oct. 31.
