Box Score and Play-by-Play
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team (6-8-1, 0-6-0 Southland Conference) couldn't break through on Friday night as the Colonels opened their final road trip of the 2010 regular season by falling to the defending regular season Southland Conference champion Texas State Bobcats (10-5-1, 4-1-1 Southland) by a final of 4-0.
The Colonels entered the contest looking for an upset of the Bobcats, but Texas State showed the form that made them the Southland's regular season champion in 2009. The Bobcats got things started with a tenth-minute goal to go up 1-0. The Nicholls defense, hampered by nagging injuries and missing multiple starters, rallied to shut Texas State down the rest of the half. The Colonels were outshot in the first half 7-4, and the Bobcats had three corner kicks late in the first half. However, the Nicholls defense held for the remainder of the half. to keep the deficit to one goal entering the second half.
Unfortunately, the Colonels fell victim to a big second half by the Bobcats. Texas State found the back of the net three times in the second to go up 4-0. The Bobcats opened the second half scoring in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. Now down by a pair of goals, the Colonels began pushing more players forward in an attempt to get back into the match, but the Bobcats took advantage by adding two more goals in the final ten minutes for the 4-0 final.
The Colonels will conclude the road portion of their 2010 schedule when Nicholls heads to Texas-San Antonio for a matchup with the Roadrunners on Sunday. Nicholls will try to repeat the success they found against UTSA when the Colonels tied the Roadrunners 1-1 in Thibodaux last season. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
