SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In their final road contest of the 2010 season, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team (6-9-1, 0-7-0 Southland Conference) turned in its best performance of the conference season. However, it wasn't enough as the Colonels fell to Texas-San Antonio (10-6-1, 5-1-1 Southland) in a 1-0 defensive struggle on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners, who entered the match with just one loss in conference play, remained in the hunt for a regular season conference championship with the win.
The Colonels were looking to repeat the success they had against UTSA in 2009 when Nicholls battled the Roadrunners to a 1-1 tie in Thibodaux, and, for a while, the Colonels looked poised to earn their first points in the conference standings.
The Nicholls defense whethered the UTSA offense in the first half. The Roadrunners outshot the Colonels 18-5 on the day and 9-2 in the first half. UTSA also managed eight corner kicks on the afternoon, including four first half opportunities. However, redshirt junior goalkeeper
Molly Mersereau made four of her eight saves in the first half and the Colonel defense forced five more Roadrunner shots off target to keep UTSA off the board in the first. After 45 minutes of play, the Colonels and Roadrunners stayed scoreless heading into halftime.
Unfoirtunatley, the Roadrunner offense finally broke through early in the second half as UTSA found the back of the net five minutes into the second half. The Colonels tried to rally, but the Roadrunner defense didn't let up, limiting Nicholls to just three second half shots.
The Colonels will now return to Thibodaux to conclude the 2010 regular season with matches against Northwestern State on Oct. 29 and Central Arkansas on Oct. 31. Nicholls contest with Northwestern State will be the Colonels' second annual "Kick for the Cure" Breast Cancer Awareness Match. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on Oct. 29.
