LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team (6-4-1, 0-2-0 Southland Conference) battled the McNeese State University Cowgirls (4-7-1, 1-0-1 Southland) through a scoreless first half, but the Cowgirls took advantage of an injury depleted Colonel squad in the second half as three second half McNeese goals handed the Colonels a 3-0 loss in Lake Charles on Sunday.
The Colonels headed into the contest missing three starters but still managed to hold the Cowgirls off the board in the first half. Unfortunately, although the Nicholls offense provided plenty of first half pressure by outshooting McNeese 7-2 in the opening frame, the Cowgirl defense didn't break.
Junior midfielder
Sam Etherington had three shots, putting two on goal and
Carolyn Noble added two more shots to lead the Colonel attack.
However, McNeese finally broke through in the second half. The Cowgirls outshot Nicholls 9-5 and had three corner kicks in the second. McNeese finally broke through with the goal in the 50th minute. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 2-0 at the 59:36 mark and a 72nd minute goal made it 3-0.
Following their match at McNeese, the Colonels will return to Nicholls for the majority of the rest of the season. After opening the season with 10 of their first 11 matches coming away from Thibodaux, the Colonels will play five of their final seven matches of the regular season at the Nicholls Soccer Field.
Nicholls will open a three-match homestand, their longest of the season on Oct. 10 against in-state rival Southeastern La.
