Senior forward Kaity Mattsson, the most prolific goal scorer in school history, will play in her last game along with four other Colonel seniors on Sunday
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team (6-10-1, 0-8-0 Southland Conference) will look to send their five-member senior class out a winner on Sunday as the Colonels celebrate Senior Day in the 2010 season finale against the Central Arkansas Bears (6-8-3, 2-4-2 Southland Conference) on Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
Having already turned in the best season in school history, the Colonels will look for their first conference win of the year in Sunday's season finale. Nicholls opened the season with a 6-2-1 start as the Colonels surpassed the school's overall wins record of four set in 2003 and matched in 2006 and 2009. However, nagging injuries throughout the lineup hampered the Colonels' chances in the conference season as the Colonels fell to 0-8-0 in league play.
The Colonels have showed signs of improvement of late as Nicholls dropped a pair of heartbreaking 1-0 losses in each of their last two matches. The Colonels fell 1-0 at Texas-San Antonio on Oct. 24 before dropping a 1-0 contest to Northwestern State on Friday.
Nicholls, which claimed a tie against Texas-San Antonio in conference play last season but has not earned a conference win since 2007, will have one last chance to send their five seniors out with a conference victory.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Nicholls soccer complex. The Colonels will honor seniors Jasmine Elsayed, Allison Flynn, Gillian McCarter,
Allison Mylius and
Kaity Mattsson (the school record holder for goals, points and game-winning goals in a single season and a career) in a pregame cermony prior to the start of the match.
