Nicholls Looks for Upset of LSU

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team (0-1) will try to rebound from a heartbreaking season opener when the Colonels head to LSU (1-0) in an attempt to snap the Tigers' streak of 82 consecutive home wins against Louisiana schools.

Nicholls heads into the meeting after falling to Houston 63-62 in overtime on Friday.  The Colonels led with under ten seconds left, but the Cougars banked in a shot in traffic with under five seconds to go and a Nicholls three-point attempt at the buzzer didn't fall as the Colonels dropped to 0-1 on the year.

The Colonels got a career performance from junior guard/forward Fred Hunter their last time out as the Denton, Texas native shot .571 from the floor (12-for-21) with a career high 28 points and also snaring eight rebounds.  For his efforts, Hunter was awarded Southland Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Nicholls also got another steady performance from senior guard/forward Anatoly Bose.  The Sydney, Australia native recorded his 30th career 20-point game on Friday, totaling 22 points and going 9-for-9 from the free throw line as part of a 12-for-12 night from the charity stripe for the Colonels.

However, the Tigers have plenty of momentum on their side after opening their season with am 87-78 win over Northwestern State on Friday.  LSU overcame a 29-point performence from the Demons' Will Pratt thanks to double-digit scoring performances from four Tigers, including 21-point performances from Ralston Turner and Andre Stringer.

The Tigers own a perfect 16-0 record against the Colonels, but Nicholls put a big scare into LSU their last time out.  The Colonels got 24 points from Bose, but a three-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall Nicholls' way as the Colonels fell to LSU 63-60 in the last meeting between the two teams on Dec. 17, 2009.

Tipoff for Tuesday night's contest is set for 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.  The game marks the second of a three-game season opening road swing for the Colonels.  After their tilt with the Tigers, Nicholls hits the road for a Nov. 21 contest at Oklahoma State.  The Colonels return to Nicholls on Nov. 26 by opening the home portion of their 2010-11 schedule with Tulane's first visit to Stopher Gym in 19 seasons.
