Colonels Rally for First Ever Win Over LSU

Final Stats Box Score and Play-by-Play

BATON ROUGE -
The Nicholls State University men's basketball team (1-1) brought an end to LSU's 82 home-court win streak against Louisiana schools as the Colonels from Thibodaux pulled away for a 62-53 win at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Tuesday night.

Senior guard/forward Anatoly Bose led all scorers by recording 28 points for the Colonel cause on 8-for-20 shooting.  Junior guard/forward Fred Hunter added 18 points while recording six steals and seven rebounds as Nicholls picked up its first win in 17 all-time match-ups with the Tigers.

Nicholls scored 11 points off of 18 Tiger turnovers and the Colonels forced 12 steals to make up for being outshot and outrebounded by LSU.  The Tigers went 16-for-43 from the field (including connecting on six of 18 three-point attempts) for a 37.2 percent field goal percentage.  Meanwhile, Nicholls went 19-for-53, including 6-for-19 from beyond the arc for a 35.2 percent shooting mark.  On the boards, LSU owned a 37-33 margin, but the Colonels took the edge on the offensive end, 10-7.

In a game that saw three tie scores and nine lead changes, the Colonels rallied from a four-point halftime deficit by putting together a 17-9 run to open the second half and put Nicholls up 38-34 with 12:31 remaining.

LSU refused to go quietly, rallying to within two of the Colonels when Storm Warren's jumper made it 42-40 in favor of Nicholls with just over six minutes left, but the Colonels answered with a 9-2 run to go up by nine.  A three-pointer by Kenny Franklin Jr. capped the run and put Nicholls up 51-42 with 3:14 to go.

The Nicholls defense kept the Tigers at bay the rest of the night as the Colonels never led by less than four the rest of the night.

With the win, the Colonels picked up their first non-conference win against NCAA Division I competition since a 2008 win over Southern.

Nicholls will return to action on Nov. 21 when the Colonels visit Oklahoma State in the finale of a three-game season-opening road trip.  The Colonels will open the home portion of the 2010-11 schedule on Nov. 26 when they welcome Tulane to Stopher Gym for the first time in 19 seasons.
