The Colonels look to upset No. 1 seed Central Arkansas on day one of the 2010 Soutlhland Conference Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The No. 8 seeded Nicholls State University women's volleyball team (14-15, 6-10 Southland Conference) makes its third consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearance when the Colonels look for an upset of No. 1 seed and regular season champion Central Arkansas on Friday in the first day of the 2010 Southland Tournament. First serve is set for 4 p.m. on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.
After qualifying for the league's postseason tournament in 2008 and 2009, the Colonels wrapped up their third straight tournament appearance on Saturday with a victory over Northwestern State in the regular season finale. It marks the first time in school history that the Colonels have qualified for three straight conference tournaments.
The Colonels will look to build on the success that they found at last season's tournament when Nicholls, seeded seventh overall, claimed a first round upset victory over No. 2 seed Sam Houston State before falling in the semifinals to No. 3 seed Stephen F. Austin.
However, Nicholls will have a difficult task in front of them on Friday when they face off against the Bears. The Colonels are winless in two matches with the Bears this season, but Nicholls isn't alone in that category. Central Arkansas, now in its first season of full NCAA Division I eligibility, rolled through the regular and Southland Conference season, racking up a 26-7 overall record, and a 15-1 mark in league play, en route to the regular season title.
A win over the Bears in the double-elimination tournament would vault the Colonels into the semifinals against the winner of the match-up between No. 4 Texas-Arlington and No. 5 Sam Houston State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The championship match of the 2010 Southland Conference Tournament is set for Sunday at 3 p.m.
