Colonels Head to New York for Two-Game Road Trip

THIBODAUX - After opening the season with the program's first 2-0 start in eight years, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team (2-1) will try to rebound from a heartbreaking loss, their first of the season, at Ole Miss on Saturday when the Colonels head to the Empire State for a pair of  games this week.

First up for Nicholls is a Stony Brook squad (1-2) looking to rebound from consecutive losses to Fordham (81-73 at the Phoenix Classic in Elon, N.C. on Nov. 13) and Hofstra (84-72 in the Seawolves' home opener on Nov. 18).  The Seawolves will try to regain the form that saw them cruise to a 77-60 victory over Troy in the season opener.

Stony Brook heads into the 2010-11 campaign picked fourth in the America East Conference preseason polls.  The Seawolves boast three scorers averaging double-digit point production in the form of Destiny Jacobs (10.7 ppg), Kirsten Jeter (10.7 ppg) and Jodie Plikus (10.0 ppg).

Following the contest with the Seawolves, the Colonels will head back to Manhattan to test themselves against national power St. John's on Friday.

The Red Storm heads into Friday's match-up with the Colonels ranked No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll this week.  St. John's is 4-1 through its first five games of the season.  The lone blemish on the Red Storm's schedule is road loss at fellow national women's basketball power Kansas State on Nov. 13.

Still, the Colonels enter the week with high hopes.  Nicholls boasts an offensive attack that features four scorers averaging in double digits.  Sophomore forward Alisha Allen leads the way for the Colonels with a 16.0 ppg mark.  The Garland, Texas native will look to build on the momentum of her first 20-point game of the season.  Allen scored a game-high 20 points at Ole Miss on Saturday, shooting .521 from the field.

Freshman KK Babin will look to continue the hot start to her college career.  The Gonzales, La. native has averaged 14.7 ppg through her first three college games while shooting .350 (7-for-20) from three-point range.  Senior Richanda Bickham  (14.0 ppg) and freshman LiAnn McCarthy (11.7 ppg) have also proven to be reliable scoring threats for the Colonels in the early going.

Tipoff between the Colonels and Seawolves is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Pritchard Gymnasium in Stony Brook, N.Y.  Friday's contest with St. John's is slated for a Noon tipoff at Carnaseca Arena in Queens, N.Y.  Links to live stats will be available at www.geauxcolonels.com on the day of the game.
