THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team (3-2) turned in it's best defensive performance of the season on Tuesday night as the Colonels recorded season highs in turnovers (29) and steals (13) to cruise to an 89-52 victory over Southern University at New Orleans in Stopher Gym on Monday night. Coming off the heels of the Colonels' 66-52 victory over Tulane, Monday night's win marks the first winning streak of the 2010-11 season for the Colonels.
Monday also marked the second consecutive contest where three different Colonels scored in double digits. The Colonels were led by senior guard/forward
Anatoly Bose who recorded his eighth consecutive 20-point game, and the 34th of his career with a 27-point night on 9-for-14 shooting (64.3 percent). The Sydney, Australia native also added a team-high seven rebounds. Bose was joined by
Fred Hunter (17 points) and true freshman guard
Dantrell Thomas (10 points) in double-digit point production.
After shooting 50 percent in their last outing, the Colonels also posted their second consecutive game with at least a 50 percet average from the floor. Nicholls connected on 33 of 63 attempts for a 52.4 percent from the floor. The Colonel offense ran through senior guard
Kenny Franklin Jr., who turned in a career night on the point, recording nine assists, bettering his previous career high of five.
With the Colonel offense hitting on all cylinders, the Nicholls defense shut down SUNO on the other end of the floor. The Colonels scored 36 points off of 29 SUNO turnovers, and 11 different players saw action with nine players recording at least one steal and five recording a pair of steals
Nicholls will now prepare to host Loyola-New Orleans on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the Houma-Terrebone Civic Center. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
