Head coach TeAna Tramel and the Colonels will look to close out their road schedule with a win on Saturday
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team (13-13, 5-8 Southland Conference) will look to snap a three-match losing streak when the Colonels wrap up the road portion of their 2010 schedule with a trip to Texas-Arlington (13-14, 7-6 Southland Conference) on Saturday.
The Colonels enter the final two weeks of the regular season in the middle of a hotly contested race for their third consecutive Southland Conference Tournament berth. With just 4.0 matches separating third through ninth place, Nicholls enters their contest with the Mavericks while tied for the eighth and final tournament spot with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi with the Islanders holding the head-to-head tiebreaker by virtue of a 3-1 win over Nicholls on Oct. 15.
A win in their road finale would help the Colonels solidify their place in the Southland's tournament race, but Nicholls will have their hands full with a UT-Arlington team that has rattled off four consecutive conference victories.
Nicholls still boasts one of the best statistical defenses in the nation as the Colonels enter Saturday's match with a 17.07 dig/set average that ranks 27th in the nation. Junior libero
Danielle Daigle leads the way for Nicholls with a 5.68 dig/set mark that ranks sixth in the country and first in the Southland Conference.
The Nicholls defense will try to slow down a hot-hitting Maverick offense that is led by Amanda Aguilera who ranks third in the Southland Conference with 294 kills.
The Colonels offensive attack is led by sophomore middle blcoker
Jessica Addicks whose .280 (237-66-610) hitting percentage ranks seventh in the league.
First serve between the Colonels and Mavericks is set for 2 p.m. at Texas Hall. Following the match, the Colonels will return to Thibodaux to conclude the 2010 regular season with matches against Central Arkansas on Nov. 11 and Northwestern State on Nov. 13.
