THIBODAUX –
The Nicholls State University football team was victimized by No. 10 Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon in John L. Guidry Stadium, losing 48-13 after falling behind 21-0 early in the first quarter.

“We're building our program and pretty much, I compare our situation to the way that they [Stephen F. Austin] built theirs. I have heard some stories in the past that they were very similar to us. I think they had a season with not many wins, if not a win. I'm trying to keep it in perspective because I want to and plan to recruit to build our program up to that of their caliber,” said head football coach Charlie Stubbs.

The Colonels (2-7, 1-4 Southland) fell behind early, and did not crack the scoreboard until right before halftime with a 32-yard field goal by true freshman Andrew Dolan. The Lumberjacks (7-2, 4-1 Southland) scored often and early, racking up 34 points before Dolan's boot. Dolan finished perfect on field goals, making due on two that included a career long 48-yard attempt.

Standing out for the Colonels offensively was true freshman running back Marcus Washington with 43 yards of total offense (25 receiving and 18 rushing), while senior running back Brandon Johnson scored the Colonels' only touchdown on a 6-yard screen play in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished with five carries for eight yards and six receptions for 40 yards in the loss.

Also leading the offense was sophomore quarterback LaQuintin Caston with 78 yards passing and a touchdown, completing 12-of-19 pass attempts. True freshman Landry Klann started the game, and was replaced by Caston in the third quarter. Klann finished 7-of-15 passing for 44 yards.

The defense was led by junior linebacker Shawn Elrod with nine total tackles (one solo) in the loss, while sophomore linebacker Jordan Piper had two interceptions to go along with five total stops (one solo) and one tackle for a loss.

The Lumberjacks finished with 461 yards of total offense in the win with All-Southland quarterback Jeremy Moses leading the charge with 280 yards passing and three touchdowns thru two and a half quarters of play.

Special teams also hurt the Colonels, coughing up two fumbles on kickoff returns and allowing the Lumberjacks to take the opening kickoff of the second half 99 yards for a touchdown. To start the second half, Stephen F. Austin scored 14 points in the first 50 seconds of the third quarter.

“When I met with their coach at midfield after the game, I told him that they had a great team. Keeping it in perspective, they have recruited for three years to their style of play,” added Stubbs. “I really feel for our kids. I didn't feel like we quit at all. They hurt, and I hurt for them because, again I know that we have some very good players on this team. However, we also have some things we have to address in the off season.”

Nicholls lone touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter, and it was one of its longest drives of the season, going 14 plays, covering 58 yards and using 7:39 of game clock to do so.

The drive ended with a Caston-to-Johnson 6-yard touchdown pass-and-catch at the 9:04 mark of the fourth quarter, which stood as the final points scored by either team in the game.

Nicholls will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Northwestern State for a 2 p.m. showdown that will appear on Southland TV. The Lumberjacks will host Southeastern La.
