The Nicholls women's basketball team will end a nine-day layoff on Monday at North Texas
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (2-5) will look to snap a five-game losing streak on Monday when the Colonels head to North Texas (2-9) on Monday night. After playing a grueling stretch of five games in 15 days against multiple national powerhouse programs, Monday's contest will end a nine-day layoff for the Colonels.
Nicholls will look to regain the form that saw the Colonels get off to the program's first 2-0 start since 2002. The Colonels claimed victories over Southern-New Orleans and Louisiana-Monroe before taking on a bevy of regional and national powers. Nicholls dropped a hearbreaker at Ole Miss on Nov. 20 before falling in a shootout at Stony Brook on Nov. 24 and picking up losses to No. 22/24 St. John's on Nov. 26 and national power LSU on Nov. 30 before a loss to Grambling on Dec. 4 brought the Colonels' skid to five.
The Mean Green enter Monday's game also having struggled. UNT owns a 2-9 record but have several hard fought losses on their ledger. UNT is also undefeated against Southland Conference opposition this season, having defeated Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State earlier this year.
North Texas features a high-scoring offense that ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference with a 70.2 point/game average. The Mean Green are led by Denetra Kellum, who ranks second in the SBC with a 16.1 point/game average, and Jasmine Godbolt, whose 14.4 point/game average ranks seventh in the SBC.
Nicholls counters with an offensive attack that features three double-digit scorers. Freshman gaurd
KK Babin leads the Colonels with a 14.6 point/game average that ranks seventh in the Southland Conference. Babin is joined by senior
Ricshanda Bickham (13.3 points/game) and sophomore forward
Alisha Allen (11.1 points/game) to give the Colonels a trio of double-digit scoring threats.
Tipoff between the Colonels and Mean Green is set for 7:00 p.m. Following the contest, the Colonels will return to Thibodaux for a two-game homestand against Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday and Georgia State on Saturday.
