THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (5-6) tied a school record by draining 12 three pointers, and the Colonels scored 24 points off of 17 Southern turnovers as the Colonels cruised past Southern 79-62 in Baton Rouge on Tuesday night. With the victory, Nicholls surpassed it's 2009-10 win total after just 11 games.
The Colonels were led by a quartet of double-digit scorers en route to their third consecutive victory. Senior guard
Ricshanda Bickham and sophomore forward
Alisha Allen each totaled 18 points. Meanwhile, freshman guard
KK Babin tallied 13 points and
Sumar Leslie added 11 to help Nicholls past the defending SWAC champions.
Nicholls got hot from the outside on Tuesday, burying 12-of-23 three point attempts for a .522 team shooting percentage from beyond the arc. The dozen treys tied a single-game school record that the Colonels had been flirting with all season. Nicholls drained 10 threes at Ole Miss on Nov. 20 before following that performance with 11 threes at Stony Brook on Nov. 24. The Colonels also came up one shy of the school record with 11 threes in their last outing against Georgia State on Saturday.
Tuesday's 12 three pointers tied a school record set in 1995 against UL-Lafayette. Bickham and Babin each had three, Allen and
Portia Washington each added two and Leslie and
Cassie Hearon each had one on the night.
Nicholls never trailed in the ball game despite being outrebounded by the Jags 40-36 and committing 15 turnovers of their own. The Colonels made the most of their opportunities, however, as nine offensive rebounds led to 17 second chance points.
With the win, the Colonels have produced their first three-game winning streak since the 2001-02 season.
