Head Coach Jim Hunter and Freshman Dmitry Kozionov take home LSWA Awards

BATON ROUGE, La. - Nicholls State University Head Coach Jim Hunter was named the LSWA men's tennis Coach of the Year, while Dmitry Kozionov picked up LSWA Freshman of the Year honors, announced the organization on Thursday morning.

The LSWA (Louisiana Sports Writers Association) also placed Kozionov on the All-Louisiana First Team on the men's side with junior Radu Ionescu and senior Phenyo Matongeach netting Honorable Mention recognition.

On the women's side, junior Florina Nosca was selected to the Second Team, and junior Natalia Zamora was an Honorable Mention selection.

"This is a great honor for our teams, and the individuals recognized," said Hunter. "Our teams really put in the extra effort to be better than their opponents, and I'm proud of all of them for their accomplishments this season."

Kozionov posted a 15-4 record in singles play, including a 4-1 record from the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Overall Kozionov was 7-0 from the No. 4 slot and 3-0 at No. 3. Ionescu and Matong both posted double digit wins in singles play with Ionescu sporting a 12-8 record, playing all but two matches from the No. 1 spot. Matong finished 13-7.

Nosca was 15-6 overall with all of her play coming at No. 1 singles, including an 8-5 record in Southland action. Zamora finished the season 17-4, playing all but one match from the No. 2 position. Nosca and Zamora did also combine for a 9-2 doubles record.

Coach Hunter finished the season with both the men's and women's squads above the .500 mark, making him one of five coaches nationally to guide two teams to winning records. Hunter, who receives the LSWA award for the third time in his career, led the men's team to its best overall record (14-6) and most wins (14) in school history this past season, and saw his team end its season in the Southland Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season. The women missed the tournament due to a tie breaker.
