Former Colonel Standout Bubba Bell Selected for AAA All-Star Game

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Former Nicholls State University baseball standout Bubba Bell will represent the Pawtucket Red Sox on the International League side of the 2010 Class AAA All-Star game, the Boston Red Sox affiliate announced on Thursday.

Bell, who played for the Colonels in 2004 and 2005, is currently fifth in the International League in batting with a .308 average in 63 games with 4 HR and 31 RBI. He has played 61 games in the Paw Sox outfield (35 in RF, 24 in CF, and 2 in LF) making 3 errors with 4 assists.

After hitting just .241 in 15 games in April, Bell recovered by becaming one of the hottest hitters in the International League, batting .313 in 25 games in May and .359 in 24 games in June.  Bell has also established himself as one of the best clutch hitters in AAA, hitting .358 (19-for-53) with 28 RBI with runners in scoring position, and batting .417 (5-for-12) with 13 RBI with the bases loaded.

Bell was hitting at a .467 clip (21-for-45) in the 15 games prior to his All-Star selection with 4 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR and 10 RBI.  Bell will be joined at the Class AAA All-Star Game by Paw Sox teammate and relief pitcher Robert Manuel.

Bell is in his sixth year in the Red Sox organization after being selected in the 39th round of the 2005 draft from Nicholls. The Houston native had a breakthrough season for Lancaster (A) in 2007 when he was named California League MVP even though he played in just 76 games before being promoted to Portland (AA). But in those 76 games he hit .370 with 27 2B, 22 HR and 83 RBI. He hit .285 in 79 games for Portland in 2008 and was selected to the Eastern League All-Star team but did not play due to a stress fracture in his leg which sidelined him for mid-July through the remainder of the season. Last year he split time between Portland (.275 in 53 games) and Pawtucket (.208 in 71 games).

Bell is the second former Colonel to be named a Minor League All-Star this summer.  Last month, former Colonel Chris Murrill was named a starter for the East Division side of the Class A Midwest League All-Star Game.  Murrill went 1-for-2 to help the East to a win over their West Division Counterparts.

The Class AAA All-Star Game is set for a 7:07 p.m. first pitch on July 14 in Lehigh Valley, Penn., home of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
