Colonel Soccer Looks to Stay Hot at Southern
THIBODAUX - Fresh off an opening week that saw the Colonels pick up their first win and sweep the first Southland Conference Player of the Week awards, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team (1-0-1) will look to stay hot when the Colonels head to the bluffs to take on Southern (0-0-0). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at A.W. Mumford Stadium on the Southern campus.
The Colonels head into Friday looking to keep their perfect record against the Jags in tact. In 12 years, Nicholls is 5-0 against Southern, including a 2-0 shutout of the Jags in 2009.
It will be opening day for the Jaguars as Nicholls will be Southern's first opponent of the regular season. But, while Southern will be kicking off the new year, the Colonels enter Friday afternoon's contest with a full head of steam.
Nicholls turned in an impressive performance at the Holiday Inn-Waller Invitational hosted by Prairie View A&M last weekend by playing 210 consecutive scoreless minutes over two games. The Colonels opened the regular season on Friday night by forcing a double overtime scoreless tie with PVAMU. The Nicholls offense came alive in its next outing as Nicholls picked its first win of the season by beating Alcorn State 8-0 on Sunday.
Dating back to 2009's regular season finale against McNeese State, the Colonel defense has turned in 244 consecutive scoreless minutes.
Nicholls impressive opening weekend led to a sweep of the Southland Conference's first player of the week awards. Senior forward Kaity Mattsson was honored as offensive player of the week after turning in the first four-goal game in school history in Sunday's win over Alcorn. Meanwhile, senior defender and Baton Rouge native Allison Mylius was honored as defensive player of the week for anchoring both clean sheets by the Nicholls defense and redshirt junior Molly Meresereau was named goalkeeper of the week after her double overtime shutout performance against PVAMU.
Following Friday's tilt with the Jags, the Colonels will return to Thibodaux to open the home portion of their regular season schedule by hosting Jackson State on Sept. 3.
