Colonel Soccer Returns Home to Host Grambling

THIBODAUX - After eight consecutive matches away from Thibodaux, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team returns to the Nicholls Soccer Field for the first regular season on-campus match of the season on Sunday.  The Colonels will host Grambling in a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Nicholls heads into the match with a 5-2-1 record.  The Colonels have already clinched the best season in school history thanks to a 5-1-1 start to the season, however, Nicholls will be looking to rebound from an 8-0 loss at the hands of Louisiana Tech on Friday when they match up with the Tigers on Sunday.

Friday's loss at La Tech finished off a stretch of eight consecutive matches away from Nicholls to open the regular season.  The Colonels hosted Southern Miss in an exhibition on Aug. 15, and the Colonels' first home match of the regular season schedule was moved from Thibodaux to Pan American Stadium in City Park New Orleans due to unplayable field conditions.

Nicholls still boasts one of the top offenses in the Southland Conference heading into their home opener.  Senior forward Kaity Mattsson began the week ranked in the top ten in the nation in three major offensive categories and needs just two more goals to set a new single season goals scored record for the third consecutive season.

Mattsson set her first single season school record with eight goals in 2008.  The Bracebrige, Ontario, Canada native turned in nine in 2009 and sits at eight heading into the ninth match of the 2010.

Sunday's match will be the culmination of the Nicholls soccer alumni weekend which began on Saturday with alumni games featuring former members of the Nicholls men's and women's soccer programs.
