Colonel Soccer Looks to Keep Best Start in School History Going at ULM

THIBODAUX - Off to the best start in school history, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team (3-0-1) will look to remain unbeaten when the Colonels hit the road for a Sunday afternoon kickoff at in-state rival UL-Monroe (2-2-0).

Nicholls heads into Sunday's match as just one of two Southland Conference teams that remain unbeaten on the year, and the Colonels head to ULM just 2-11-1 all time against the Warhawks.  Nicholls hopes that being undefeated through the first four matches of the season for the first time in school history will give Nicholls some momentum against its former Southland Conference foe.

The Colonels are riding high after a 2-0 win in a physical match up with Jackson State at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans on Friday afternoon.  Twenty three fouls were called in the contest, but the Colonels got a penalty kick goal from Sam Etherington and Kaity Mattsson delivered her seventh goal of the season.

Already the most prolific scorer in Colonel soccer history, Mattsson's school records for career goals and career points have increased to 28 and 58, respectively.  The Nicholls forward has been the most productive forward in the Southland Conference through the first four matches of the season, leading the league in points (14), points per game (3.5), goals (7), and goals per game (1.75) while tying for the lead in game winning goals (2).

Meanwhile, the Nicholls defense has been anchored by redshirt junior goalkeeper Molly Mersereau who has not allowed a goal in any of her first 255 minutes.  As a team, the Colonels have allowed just one goal in 390 minutes and recording three shutouts in their first four matches.

The Nicholls defensive unit, led by Allison Mylius and Meghan Lanteigne in the first two weeks, have kept the pressure off of the Colonel net.  The Nicholls defense has allowed just 22 shots on the year, forcing all but 13 off target, 12 of which were saved by Colonel netminders Mersereau and Sarah Damen.

However, the Colonels will have their work cut out for them is they want to remain undefeated.  ULM enteres the contest with a 2-2 record, but the Warhawks have some momentum of their own after a 3-2 double overtime victory over Centenary on Friday.  The win over the Ladies snapped a two match losing streak the Warhawks accumulated at the Las Vegas Invitational with a hard-fought 3-2 double OT loss to Portland State and a 4-0 defeat at the hands of undefeated host UNLV.

Kickoff for the Colonels and Warhawks is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Monroe.  The contest continues a streak of eight consecutive matches played away from Thibodaux by the Colonel soccer team.  Following the contest with ULM, the Colonels will visit UL-Lafayette (Sept. 10), Mississippi Valley State (Sept. 12) and Louisiana Tech (Sept. 24) before returning home to Nicholls to host Grambling on Homecoming Weekend (Sept. 26).
