Colonels Look to Stay Unbeaten at ULL

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team (4-0-1) will look to keep the best start to a season in school history in tact, and set a new single season school record for wins when the Colonels head to UL-Lafayette (3-3) for a Friday night match up against the Cajuns.

The match marks the sixth match of a string of eight matches away from Thibodaux to open the season.  However, the road has been kind to Nicholls this year as the Colonels have put together the best start in school history.  Since the founding of the program in 1998, no Nicholls team has been undefeated through the first five matches of the year.  The Colonels' four-game winning streak after opening the season with a double overtime tie at Prairie View A&M is the longest winning streak in the history of the program.

Meanwhile, just five matches into the season, the Colonels have already tied the program's single season wins record set in 2003 and met again in 2006 and 2009. are one of just two undefeated teams left in the Southland Conference (in-state rival and defending Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana is the other).

The Colonels have been led by one of the top offenses in the Southland Conference.  Heading into this week's action, Nicholls boasts the league's leading goal scorer in the form of senior forward Kaity Mattsson.  The Bracebridge, Ontario native leads the league in goals (8), points (17), goals/game (1.60), points/game (3.40) and game-winning goals (3).

Meanwhile, the Colonels also boast one of the league's top defenses as redshirt junior goalkeeper Molly Mersereau ranks second in the conference in goals against average (0.68) and the Colonels, as a team, rank second in goals against average (0.55).

The Colonels head into the match looking to extend the Cajuns' two match losing streak.  ULL dropped matches to Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin heading into Friday night's match.  Following their 7 p.m. match with the Cajuns, the Colonels will continue their road trip with a trip to Mississippi Valley State on Sunday.
