Colonels Return to Nicholls Looking for First Conference Win

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (5-9, 0-1 Southland Conference) returns home for the first time since Dec. 18 when the Colonels host the Northwestern State Demons (6-8, 1-0 Southland Conference) in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels will be trying to rebound from a heartbreaking 69-62 loss in Saturday's Southland Conference opener at Texas-Arlington that wasn't decided until the final minute.  Nicholls will be trying to end a three-game losing streak and return to the form that saw the Colonels rattle off three consecutive wins from Dec. 15-21, for the program's first three-game win streak since 2001-02.

Meanwhile, the Demons enter Wednesday's contest having won two straight and three of their last five.  Northwestern State is fresh off a Southland Conference opening victory over Texas State on Saturday.

The Demons feature a trio of double digit scorers, led by Trudy Armstead's 12.3 point/game average.  Brittiany Houston (10.2 points/game) and Jordan James (10.0 points/game) help bolster the NSU attack and Jasmine Bradley (.512 shooting percentage) is third in the conference in field goal percentage.

However, the Colonels respond with four double digit scorers of their own.  Senior guard Ricshanda Bickham leads the team with a 14.4 point/game average and is joined by: freshman guard KK Babin (13.9 ppg), junior guard Sumar Leslie (12.0 ppg) and freshman forward LiAnn McCarthy (11.7 ppg).

On the defensive end, Babin has led the way, averaging 2.8 steals/game, the 45th best average in the country and the second best mark in the Southland Conference.  Babin has also established herself as one of the most dangerous perimeter shooters in the country, averaging 3.0 three pointers/game, the 17th best mark in the nation.

Tipoff between the Colonels and Demons is set for 6:30 p.m. at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux.  Following the contest, Nicholls will play host to Sam Houston State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
