Nicholls Looks to Upset League-Leading Cowgirls on "Stuff Stopher" Night

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (6-12, 1-4 Southland Conference) will try to make it two in a row when the Colonels host a McNeese State squad that is undefeated in conferece play (12-5, 5-0) in the first game of a men's and women's basketball double header on "Stuff Stopher" Night on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Colonels are fresh off a 62-50 victory at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, a win that gave the Colonels' their first league win of the season, broke a streak of six consecutive losses, ended an 11-game Southland Conference skid, and snapped a 32-game losing streak in conference road games.

However, the Colonels will be squaring off against the hottest team in the conference on Wednesday night.  McNeese is undefeated through its first five conference contests led by Ashlyn Baggett, the conference's third leading scorer who averages 15.2 points/game.  She is joined by her sister, Caitlin Baggett, whose 1.3 assist/turnover ratio ranks sixth in the league.

The Cowgirls are strong on both ends of the court, ranking third in the Southland Conference in scoring average (70.2 points/game) and first in the league in scoring defense (55.6 points/game).  McNeese has cruised to most of its victories, averaging a +14.7 scoring margin, the best mark in the conference.

The Colonels will look to answer with a balanced offensive attack that features four scorers averaging double-digit point production.  Senior guard Ricshanda Bickham leads the way with a 14.6 point/game average.  She is joined by freshman guard KK Babin (12.6 points/game), junior guard Sumar Leslie (11.5 ppg) and sophomore forward Alisha Allen (11.3 ppg).

Nicholls also boasts one of the most aggressive defenses in the country.  The Colonels head into Wednesday's contest ranked 31st in steals/game (11.4).  Both Babin (2.9 steals/game) and Bickham (2.5 steals/game) are averaging more than 2.5 steals/game to lead Nicholls' defensive efforts.

Wednesday's contest between the Colonels and Cowgirls is set for a 5 p.m. tipoff.  The game will be followed by the Nicholls vs. McNeese men's game at 7 p.m.  Admission is free to all Nicholls students with a valid Nicholls Student ID Card, and in conjunction with Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night, all Nicholls faculty and staff will receive free admission with the presentation of their Colonel Card.

A free live streaming video webcast of both games will be made available at www.thibodauxonline.com.
