Nicholls looks for its second consecutive win against the Islanders on Wednesday
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (6-14, 1-6 Southland Conference) returns to Stopher Gym looking for their first home court conference win in the opener of a two-game homestand against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (2-18, 0-7 Southland Conference) on Wednesday night. Tipoff against the Islanders is set for 6:30 p.m. in Stopher Gym.
The Colonels will be looking for to repeat the success they found against the Islanders in their last matchup. Nicholls claimed a 61-58 win over AMCC on Feb. 6, 2010 for their only victory of the conference season. A win over the Islanders would give Nicholls its most victories since a seven win season in 2006-07.
However, the Islanders will prove to be a motivated opponent as AMCC looks to snap a seven-game losing streak and pick up its first win of the conference season. The Islanders are led by Adrienne Scott who ranks 11th in the Southland Conference in scoring (13.4 points/game) and fifth in the league in field goal percentage (.490). Scott is joined by Lauren Smith and her 11.4 point/game average to give the Islanders a pair of double-digit scoring threats.
Nicholls counters with an offensive attack that boasts four double digit scorers. Senior guard
Ricshanda Bickham leads the Colonels with a 14.6 point/game average and is joined by freshman guard KK Babin (12.5 points/game), sophomore forward
Alisha Allen (11.8 points/game) and junior guard
Sumar Leslie (11.4 points/game).
Nicholls boasts one of the better outside shooting teams in the country, ranking 50th in the nation with a 6.8 three pointer/game average. Babin leads the way, averaging 2.6 threes/game, the 43rd best mark in the country.
Nicholls also boasts one of the most aggressive defenses in the nation, entering the week ranked 20th nationally with a +5.3 turnover margin and 29th nationally with an 11.5 steal/game mark.
Tipoff between the Colonels and the Islanders is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday will also be Academic Night at Stopher Gym as Nicholls honors it's top academic student athletes with a halftime ceremony.
