Lone Star State Matches On Tap For Volleyball This Weekend

THIBODAUX, La. – Coming off a split last week in Southland Conference play, the Nicholls women's volleyball team heads to Texas to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Thursday, and league-leading Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners Saturday.

Last week the Colonels (15-7, 2-4 SLC) defeated rival Southeastern 3-1 before falling to Sam Houston State 3-1 at home last Saturday. The win against the Lady Lions snapped a three-match losing streak, but the loss to the Bearkats extended the team's losing streak to three at home for the first time all season after being undefeated at home in non-conference play.

The Islanders have the second worst record in the league, ahead of Southeastern, sitting at 9-13 overall and 1-5 in conference. They've lost their last 18 sets by a 9-3 score, including a non-conference loss to Houston Baptist on the road. However, the one win in conference is a 3-2 victory over Sam Houston who is second in the western division at 5-2.

Since Southland play began, TAMUCC has the lowest hitting percentage at .113, assists per set with 10.30 and kills per set with 10.91. The Islanders are led offensively by freshman Brianna Brink's 2.50 kills per set and sophomore Logen Bourque's 765 assists on the year. Micha Nolan leads the team with 5.02 digs per set, while Brook Alverson has 65 blocks.

Last year's tournament champions, the Roadrunners are running away from the field with a perfect 6-0 conference mark so far, sweeping every match in the league to date in 2011. They are either first or second in every major statistical category except for service aces where they rank eighth. UTSA ranks in the top 50 in assists, blocks, digs and kills per set in the nation.

The Colonels will have to try and contain Brittany Malloy and McKenzie Adams, as Adams was named the Collegiate Volleyball Update National Player of the Week, and Malloy who was named the SLC Defensive Player of the Week. After Malloy and Adams, Nicholls will also have to try to be offensively efficient against one of the nations top libero's in Kelsey Jewasko, who is averaging 5.60 digs per set and has over 2,000 for her career.

The match against TAMUCC will begin at 7 p.m. in Corpus Christi, and will also double as their “Dig Pink” game, while the match against the Roadrunners is at 2 p.m on Saturday in San Antonio.
