Nicholls will play their last two road matches of the year this weekend against Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin.
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team will end a three-match conference road swing this weekend, facing the Sam Houston State Bearkats and Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks this Friday and Saturday.
The Colonels are coming off of a hard-fought 5-2 loss to the Southeastern Lady Lions last Sunday, falling to 0-5 in the Southland and 6-8-1 on the year. Although the team had been shut out in the three previous matches leading into the Southeastern game,
Keisha Brown and Kristy Tatom each scored, as Brown actually gave the Colonels a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute.
In the Colonels' history, the squad has more wins over Sam Houston than any other conference opponent, sitting at 3-5-1 all time against the Bearkats. All three wins however are at home and Nicholls has yet to defeat SHSU in Huntsville.
At 7-9-1 on the year, the Kats are 3-3 in the league and in sixth place in the standings, coming off of a 3-1 win over Central Arkansas Wednesday. Sam Houston has won their last two matches and has given up only six goals in conference play, while scoring six of their own. Hovering around the middle of the pack statistically, they are tied for the league lead in corner kicks with 35 through six games.
The SFA Ladyjacks have been an unstoppable force on the pitch since conference play started, undefeated at 6-0 in the Southland heading into this weekend. Winners of their last nine overall, the Ladyjacks are 11-2-1 and have outscored their opponents 21-0, with a scoring average of +3.50. As a group they lead the league in every statistical category, with Chelsea Raymond leading in goals, points, shots and game winning goals, while last week's offensive player of the week Kylie Louw leads in assists.
Nicholls has only beaten the Ladyjacks once in the team's history, that win coming in 2000 in Nacogdoches, and has either lost or tied in the last 16 matches against SFA.
Kickoff against the Bearkats is at 7 p.m. Friday in Huntsville, with the game against SFA beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
