The Colonels will wrap up the 2011 season this weekend against UTSA and Texas State
THIBODAUX, La. – After playing three straight matches on the road, the Nicholls women's soccer team will close out the 2011 season at home this weekend, taking on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners and Texas State Bobcats Friday and Sunday.
The matchup on Thursday and Saturday will mark the final time the Colonels will face the Roadrunners and Bobcats on the pitch as conference foes, as UTSA and Texas State will each head to the Western Athletic Conference. Sunday's match will also serve as Senior Day, as the athletic department will honor the contributions of
Keisha Brown,
Sam Etherington,
Kandice Champagne Michaela Gaudin and
Molly Mersereau.
This group of seniors will leave Nicholls as the winningest class in soccer history, amassing 20 wins during their tenure in Thibodaux.
Sitting at 6-10-1 on the year, Nicholls dropped both of its matches last week, losing a heartbreaker to Sam Houston State 1-0 before falling to conference-leading Stephen F. Austin 6-0 in Nacogdoches dropping to 0-7 in conference play.
Nicholls was one play away from tying the Bearkats last weekend, when after an errant ball got past the Sam Houston goalie,
Melissa Pestalozzi's shot was blocked at the last second. Then having to turn around and play the best team in the conference made things tougher for the group, as the Ladyjacks kept its streak alive of shutting out every conference opponent they've played so far in their 6-0 win.
The Colonels this week face a team that will be getting one of their star players back, as well as a team riding a five-match winning streak heading into the weekend.
The Roadrunners are 7-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference, tied for third after clinching a spot in the conference tournament after scratching out a tie with Lamar and defeating McNeese last weekend. UTSA will also be getting back Sophomore forward Maria Jose Rojas, who was away playing with the Chile National Team in the 2011 Pan American Games.
Winners of three of their last four, the Roadrunners have a scoring margin of +0.57 scoring 12 goals in conference as opposed to eight to its opponents. The Colonels will also have to deal with the reigning goalie of the week in Danielle Snyder. Nicholls is 0-4-1 against UTSA all-time.
Texas State currently has the second longest winning streak in the conference at five straight, and is in sole possession of second place with a 6-1 record in the league. The Bobcats still have an outside shot of at least a share of the conference title if Stephen F. Austin loses its final match this week.
As one of three teams that has scored 12 goals in conference play, the Bobcats are one of the stingiest in the league, allowing less than a goal per game in conference and 14 total in the year. Nicholls will have to fend off Felicia Lesak who is second in the conference in goals scored and points, and third in assists. The Colonels are winless against the Bobcats all-time at 0-15-0.
The match will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Sunday with live stats available at www.sidearmstats.com/nichols/wsoc and on www.geauxcolonels.com/mobile.
