UTSA-Nicholls Box Score
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 match on a cold, dreary afternoon at the Nicholls Soccer Complex Friday to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.
Nicholls (6-11-1, 0-8 SLC) gave up only one goal midway through the first period to UTSA (8-7-2, 5-2-1 SLC), but allowed two in the second that proved to be too much for the Colonels to overcome in the end.
The Colonels were only able to get seven shots in the game with five shots on goal. On the flip side, the Roadrunners had ten total shots in the second half alone en route to 18 total shots in the match, 11 being on goal.
Maria Jose Rojas, who returned to the Roadrunners after participating in the Pan American Games, scored two goals in the match, the first coming in the 26th minute when she got a ball past
Molly Mersereau after the Nicholls goalie had come too far out from the net, and again in the 49th minute on a shot from the top of the box.
The last goal came in the 71st minute from Amanda Ortegon who scored on a cross shot from the left side of the box to make the score 3-0 in favor of UTSA.
Kristy Tatom and
Janelle Brandom each had two shots on goal for the Colonels, while
Kandice Champagne was the only other Nicholls player to get a shot on goal in the match. Although allowing three goals,
Molly Mersereau had eight saves in the game, including back-to-back saves on two different headers in the first period. UTSA had five saves between starter Danielle Snyder and sub Ari Calderon, as Snyder got over 70 minutes of action after the lead was secure.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday afternoon hosting the Texas State Bobcats to close out the 2011 season. It will also serve as Senior Day, as the club will honor
Sam Etherington,
Keisha Brown,
Michaela Gaudin, Champagne and Mersereau before the start of the match.
