Colonels Fall In Season Finale to Bobcats

THIBODAUX, La. – On the day where the team honored she and her senior teammates Michaela Gaudin, Keisha Brown, Sam Etherington, Molly Mersereau, Kandice Champagne scored in her final game as a Colonel as the team fell to the Texas State Bobcats 4-1 Sunday afternoon.

It was the last match of the year for the team and finishes the year 6-12-1 overall and 0-9 in conference play with a 5-4-1 mark at home. It is the second consecutive year that the team has finished with six wins in a season and is the first time in team history that any Nicholls soccer group has done so in back-to-back years.

Champagne scored on a header goal in the 81st minute, setting up close enough to the net on the right side that the pass from Etherington was spot on for Champagne to flick the ball in the net for the Colonels' only score of the afternoon.

Texas State's Kendell Webber earned her sixth goal of the year for the Bobcats in the 21st minute of the game, getting a well played pass from Felicia Leask that got past Mersereau on the right side of the net.

Serena Hines made the score 2-0 in favor of Texas State after getting a pass from Jourdan Brown in the 77th minute, and two minutes later after a scrum close to the net, the ball got free as Ali Myers fired on an open net to put the Bobcats up 3-0.

After Champagne's ninth goal of her career, no less than 30 seconds later Hines scored her second goal of the match as her shot bounced off the right side post and ricocheted into the net making the final score 4-1.

The Colonels finished with seven shots on the day, with four being on goal, while the Bobcats had 16 shots with ten on goal. Both Champagne and Brown had two shots on the day, as Champagne's shots were each on goal, as Kristy Tatom, Britni Crone and Melissa Pestalozzi finished with one shot each.

Mersereau finishes her career at Nicholls as only the second goalie with more than 6000 minutes played in a career and played in all 90 minutes today with six saves. She started in 17 of the 19 total matches this year and finishes this year with a GAA of 1.91 and 84 saves for a 73-percent save percentage.

On the year, Kristy Tatom led the team in goals with six and points with 14, Etherington in assists with three and corner kicks with 27 and Champangne in shots with 30.
