Colonels Drop 1-0 Contest to Lamar

THIBODAUX, La. - After 45 minutes of play, the Nicholls State women's soccer team was pressing for anything they could against Lamar Lady Cardinals. But controlling the ball for most of the second period wouldn't be enough as the Colonels fell 1-0 to Lamar Sunday afternoon at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.

Nicholls (6-7-1, 0-4 SLC) kept the Lady Cards (6-5-1, 3-0 SLC) on their heels for most of the second 45-minute session, and had a chance to tie the game when Janelle Brandom was called offside and the goal was nulled. Brandom finished with three shots in the game to lead the Colonels, with two on goal.

Nicholls put the clamp on Lamar in the period, limiting the Lady Cards to only six shots to Nicholls' five, with two of Lamar's shots on goal. Molly Mersereau finished the day with six saves, some of the most crucial coming in the second period to keep the Colonels in the match.

It seemed as if the first period would end with a scoreless draw, but Lisa Hance was able to fire a goal over the head of Mersereau in the 43rd minute to put Lamar up 1-0. In the first period alone, the Lady Cards fired off 12 shots with five on goal, limiting the Colonels to only two, with each being on goal. Brown had each of those shots, one being a header, and the other on an advance from midfield.

The Colonels will hit the road for their next three matches, beginning next week facing Southeastern in Hammond next Sunday at 1 p.m.
