A.J. Carter will be one of 17 seniors to be honored on Saturday night
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University football team will be looking to win its 2011 home-finale on Saturday as the Colonels take on Lamar University for Senior Night at John L. Guidry Stadium. Kickoff for the Southland Conference matchup is scheduled for 5:37 p.m.
A live television broadcast of the game will be available on WHNO-TV Channel 20 in New Orleans and also KBTV FOX 4 in Beaumont, Texas. The broadcast can also be viewed on the internet on ESPN3 (subject to blackout).
“I thought we played well in all three phases last weekend, and we can definitely build on that,” said Nicholls head football coach Charlie Stubbs. “We were disciplined, we had no penalties on offense and only two for the game. We made McNeese beat us instead of defeating ourselves.”
While Nicholls (1-8, 0-5 SLC) led at the half for the third time this season, two turnovers in the third quarter allowed the Cowboys to keep the Colonels winless in conference play. Lamar (3-6, 1-4 SLC) will be trying to get its second conference victory and snap a five-game skid after falling to Stephen F. Austin last weekend, 69-10.
“We know that Lamar is just like us in searching for a conference win. They've been hard to come by for both teams this year,” said Coach Stubbs. “I expect for them to play their best and we will have to bring our A game to be competitive.”
The Colonels continue to have one of the Southland's best rushing attacks, led by the duo of quarterback
LaQuintin Caston (54.5 ypg) and running back
Marcus Washington (53.8 ypg). Caston gained 129 yards rushing last weekend, but sack yardage prevented him for his sixth career 100-yard game, finishing with 94. As a team, the Colonels are averaging 134.2 yards per contest on the ground.
Lamar opened up conference play with a 45-35 victory over Southeastern La., but the Cardinals have dropped their last five outings. Head coach Ray Woodard made a change at quarterback last weekend, giving sophomore Doug Prewitt the start, but the Cardinals could only muster one touchdown in their loss against SFA.
One constant for Lamar has been the play of wide receiver J.J. Hayes, who is tied for third in the Southland with 72.8 yards receiving per game. For the season, he has 35 receptions for 655 yards and three touchdowns.
Saturday's contest will be only the fourth meeting between the two universities, and the first since 1984. Lamar is 2-1 all-time, with each team alternating home victories.
Before kickoff, the Nicholls football program will honor the 17 seniors on the 2011 roster. The senior class includes
