NEW ORLEANS, La. – A 20-4 run in the first five minutes, coupled with 13 made three-pointers by the Tulane Green Wave was too much for the Colonels to handle as the Nicholls men's basketball team fell 96-50 Tuesday night in Fogelman Arena.
The Colonels (0-2) were held to just 34-percent shooting in the game, and turned over the ball 17 times, allowing 23 points by Tulane (2-0). No Nicholls player scored in double figures as
Jeremy Smith led the team with nine points in 19 minutes of action. Seven of his nine points he scored in the first half.
Led by a game-high 23 points from Josh Davis, the Green Wave had four players score in double-digits, and shot 60-percent as a team for the game. Tulane scored 34 points in the paint and outrebounded the Colonels 36-24.
The Green Wave came out with a ferocious energy to begin the game, and put the Colonels in a deep hole early getting the Colonels in foul trouble and going to the line. Tulane got
Chris Talkington with three early fouls for a quick quarter for him, as Tulane hit 11 free throws in the first period alone. Jordan Callahan and Davis were the main catalysts of the period as they combined for 22 points.
The Colonels finally got some momentum off of the bench thanks to the play of Smith, who scored seven of his points in just eight minutes of play in the half. The Colonels finally got some shots to fall, but only hit nine shots compared to the 18 Tulane hit.
The 26-point hole the Colonels found themselves in at the start of the second half ballooned after a 16-5 run by Tulane, making the score 71-34 with 14:34 remaining in the game. Nicholls scored ten points during an eight minute stretch thanks to scores by
Lachlan Prest,
Bryan Hammond and Smith, but the Colonels would only score seven more points for the duration of the game.
The Colonels will return to action this Friday as they open up play at the ULL Beryl Shipley Classic taking on Cal State Fullerton Friday afternoon at the Cajundome.
