Nicholls Falls in Season Finale against Southeastern La., 31-14

Final Stats HAMMOND, La.  - The Nicholls State University football team came up empty in two key first-half possessions, had five turnovers for the game and Southeastern Louisiana quickly turned a 10-0 halftime lead to 31 points as the Lions reclaimed the River Bell with a 31-14 victory at Strawberry Stadium on Thursday night.

“We just killed ourselves with turnovers and penalties. We had the fumble in the end zone and missed a field goal early on. We just had some unbelievable mistakes,” said Nicholls head football coach Charlie Stubbs. “We had some guys make some tremendous plays tonight, but putting it all together and not finishing, that's the frustrating part.”

With the loss, Nicholls (1-10, 0-7 SLC) ends the season with a 10-game losing streak, and comes up empty in conference play for the first time since 2000. Southeastern Louisiana (3-8, 1-6 SLC) snaps a three game overall skid as well as a three-game streak in the River Bell series.

Quarterback Landry Klann came into the game in the second half to lead the Colonels to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Klann rushed for a 2-yard touchdown and finished 9-of-15 passing for 91 yards with a TD to Kenyad Blair.

Nicholls held a slim 412-393 advantage on total offense, and dominated the time of possession with over 35 minutes. In the first half, the Colonels held the ball for nearly 22 minutes, but came up with no points after two long drives.

After the Nicholls defense held SLU to a field goal after facing a 1st and goal at the 1, starting quarterback LaQuintin Caston, who finished with 175 yards passing and 94 yards rushing, ran for 52 yards to get the Colonels into Lion territory. However, a personal foul penalty moved Nicholls out of field goal range before turning the ball over on downs.

At the end of the first, Nicholls was not able to capitalize on an 11-play, 64-yard drive as Andrew Dolan's 39-yard field missed wide left.

In the second, Nicholls ate up over nine minutes of the clock with a 17-play drive. The Colonels had the ball 1st and goal inside the SLU 10, and on fourth down at the 1, Caston lost the ball as he tried to cross the goal line, with the ball going out of bounds in the end zone for a touchback. The Lions took advantage of the turnover by scoring on a TD pass to Kory Theodore for a 10-0 lead.

In the second half, linebacker Jordan Piper came up with a forced fumble and recovery for a touchback for the Colonels, but Caston threw an interception on Nicholls' second play. The Lions once again answered with a TD drive, and blew the game open with two more touchdowns before the end of the third to lead 31-0.

With Klann in the game, Nicholls was able to finally crack the scoring column with two quick touchdowns. After his rushing TD, Byron Cobb recovered a kickoff for Nicholls, and Klann found Kenyad Blair, who had 51 yards on four catches, for a 3-yard reception with 12:52 remaining. The defense forced a punt on the next possession, but the Lions picked up their second interception to end the threat as they went on to win 31-14.

Piper led the defense with 11 tackles, and sophomore Brian Lewis finished with 10. Freshman Davin Bovie added a career-high seven stops.
