Colonels Fall in Four Sets to Second-Place Texas State

Final Stats THIBODAUX – After dropping the first two sets, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team fought back to claim the third set against second-place Texas State, but the Bobcats proved to be too strong as they staved off the Colonels for their 12th straight Southland Conference victory, defeating Nicholls 3-1 (25-12, 25-19, , 22-25, 25-18) on Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 17-12 on the year, and 4-9 in conference. Texas State (21-7, 12-1 SLC) has not lost a conference match since its opener against UTSA, who is currently undefeated in Southland play.

Middle blocker Jessica Addicks led the Colonels with a career hitting night, tallying a .667 mark with 11 kills. Jennifer Brandt and Sarah Terry recorded double-doubles in the loss, finishing with 11 kills/13 digs and 10 kills/10 digs, respectively.

Texas State hit at a .333 clip (70/15/165), while holding Nicholls to .174 (45/20/144). Amber Calhoun led all players with a match-high 17 kills. Lindy DeGeare (14) and Amari Deardoff (12) also finished in double-digit kills.

The Bobcats came out of the gates on fire, using six kills to take a 9-2 lead. Brandt then scored a kill to give the Colonels the serve, and Nicholls pieced together a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two. However, Texas State expanded the lead for good and closed out the opening set by scoring the last seven points to win 25-12.

The second set was much of the same as Texas State led for most of the duration and by as much as seven points before claiming a 25-19 victory.

Following five early ties in set three, the Colonels gained the lead for good at 7-6 on a kill by Rachel Yezak. Nicholls led by four points on two different occasions in the game, at 14-10 and at set point, 24-20. Texas State threatened to come back by scoring the next two points, but Kathryn Stock delivered a set-clinching kill, giving Nicholls a 25-22 win.

In the fourth and final set, Texas State scored 19 kills with just five errors to clinch the match, 3-1, with a 25-18 victory.

Jordan Karst led the Colonels with 26 assists, while Nancy Taylor added 13. On defense, Yezak and Addicks had three blocks each, and Yezak finished with a match-high 16 digs.

Nicholls will close out its 2011 home schedule on Saturday against Texas-Arlington. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
