The Colonels fell to the Longhorns 93-40 Tuesday night in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team had the tough task of playing on back-to-back nights and the Texas Longhorns took advantage of it, going on an 11-0 run out of the gate in the second half en route to a 93-40 win over the Colonels Tuesday night in Austin.
Texas (8-2) outscored the Colonels (3-7) 40-10 in the second period alone, as the Colonels only made three shots in the half, all coming from
Dantrell Thomas who came in during the waning minutes of the game to score six points in seven minutes. The Colonels made a season-low 14 shots on the night (14-of-51) for a 27-percent clip.
Bryan Hammond led the Colonels in scoring with nine points, followed by
Trevon Lewis and
Jeremy Smith who each finished with seven. Texas had four players finish in the double-digits, led by J'Covan Brown who had 23 points in just 29 minutes of play.
The Longhorns took advantage of the Colonels size-wise, scoring 50 points in the paint on the night, and grabbed a season high 52 rebounds, leading to 30 second chance points on 24 offensive rebounds.
The Longhorns gave the Colonels a bit of hope early, after Nicholls went up 5-2 and 7-5, but Texas got one of five 3-pointers in the first half and never looked back after. Texas hit 20 shots in the half keyed by runs of 12, 12 and 11 points during the first to go up by as many as 21 points to end the first stanza.
The Colonels went more than four minutes of play struggling to score from the 11:48 mark to the 7:21 mark, scoring only three points during that time. Nicholls made 11 shots in the half and went to the line six times, compared to the Longhorns who got 18 of Brown's game-high 23 on 7-of-13 shooting in the half alone.
Hammond and Lewis were the only starters to make more than one basket in the contest, while Thomas was the only reserve to do the same. The Longhorn bench scored 51 points in the game, and forced Nicholls into 20 turnovers, scoring 25 points and 16 fast break points.
The Colonels will return to action on Friday taking on Dillard in Stopher Gym with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m.
